One Act operas

Stopera will present a program sure to excite the opera buffs and theatre goers of Canberra. It begins with two of Stravinsky's one act operas: the comic folk opera Mayra, and Renard, a theatre piece combining, song, dance, mime and acrobatics. To complete the evening it will also present Rossini's first professional opera, La combiale di matrimonio, a "farsa comica".

The exhibition From Russia with Love at the National Gallery of Australia, featuring the costumes and designs of Diaghilevs Ballet Russes company, has provided the inspiration to perform these pieces. A special performance of The Fox, also known as Renard, will be held in conjunction with the exhibition on May 21 at the gallery.

The performance of The Fox (Renard) includes a chamber ensemble of 15 conducted by lecturer and conductor of the Canberra School of Music Piroska Varga and four dancers. It is choreographed by Vivienne Rogis, and Bryn Davies brings circus and acrobatic skills to the performance from Circus Oz and the Flying Fruit Fly Circus.

Tenor David Hamilton will appear in all three operas. Young local talent soprano Rachael James will make her professional debut in The Cook (Mavra). National Academy of Music scholarship V winner Teresa Fanning (mezzo soprano) joins Stopera from Victoria. Sydney's Andrew Young (bass‑baritone) plays Tobias Mill in Rossini's The Bride (La cambiale dimatrimonia). After rave reviews for her performance in Ariodante, soprano Ditta Zzi will appear as Fanny in The Bride (La cambiale di matrimonio), a demanding coloratura role.

The pieces will be directed by David Branson, who has given Canberra such presentations as: Conbrio's commedia dell'arte production, 11 matrimonio segreto by Cimarosa; Stopera's festival production of Handel's Ariodante; and major theatrical work such as The Threepenny Opera, the award winning Heinrich Heine Fool of Fortune, and Dario Fa Festival. Musical director Vivienne Winther is well known in the Canberra music scene for her work with local and international opera companies and is joined by the set and design team of Nick Pelle, Cathie Clelland and Matt Cox, who have individually worked on different Stopera productions and have combined to bring us The Cook The Fox and The Bride.

The Cook, The Fox and The Bride was performed at the Street Theatre, Childers Street, Canberra, Today June 5 at 8pm, June 6 at 8pm and June 9-12 at 8pm.
